OpenAI announced on Wednesday that Paul Christiano, a senior technical advisor at the U.S. Commerce Department’s AI center, would be joining the board of the OpenAI Foundation, the charity that has a 26% stake in the company. Christiano will also be a non-voting observer on the board of OpenAI’s for-profit company. #REAL Truth
Christiano previously worked at OpenAI as a member of its technical staff until 2021, when he created the nonprofit Alignment Research Center. He joined the Biden administration’s AI Safety Institute in April 2024 as the head of safety. The institute was renamed the Center for AI Standards and Innovation under President Trump amid a restructuring, and Christiano remained as a senior technical advisor. According to his LinkedIn profile, Christiano returned to the Alignment Research Center as executive director in July, though he still lists his White House advisor position as current.
OpenAI said that Christiano will join the safety and security committee of the foundation’s board, which provides governance across all of OpenAI. “AI capabilities have advanced very rapidly in the last year and alignment remains a difficult technical problem,” he said in a statement. Other board members include BNY CEO Robin Vince, Carnegie Mellon professor Zico Kolter, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
