Former President Donald Trump made headlines on Friday with an about-turn on the subject of a TikTok ban, posting on his Truth Social service his view that getting rid of TikTok would strengthen Facebook, which he now sees as a “true Enemy of the People.” His bizarre post—Trump, if you’ll remember, started the movement to ban TikTok in 2020—came as an anti-TikTok bill gathered steam. On Thursday, a House panel unanimously approved the bill—which would require TikTok to cut ties with its Chinese parent ByteDance or face a ban in the U.S.—and it’s scheduled to go to the floor of the House for a vote next week. Late on Friday, President Joe Biden confirmed that he would sign the bill if it got to his desk. Perhaps the prospect of siding on any issue with Biden was too much for Trump. You have to wonder whether Trump’s stance could persuade his acolytes in Congress to oppose the bill. To be sure, Trump didn’t oppose the bill outright. He seems to be more concerned about keeping TikTok around—but then, the sponsors of the bill have pointed out that they’re not pushing for a ban. They simply want ByteDance to sell the app. Whether that nuance will matter to Trump’s supporters is hard to say. Either way, this is a volatile situation. Anything could happen.
